The Health and Development Foundation NPC

Driving Innovation in Community Health

Why We Exist

The Health and Development Foundation (HDF) was created in response to the ongoing challenges faced by NGOs in the health sector, especially those affected by funding constraints. In 2024, we formally handed over 49 mobile clinics that had operated across four provinces — the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Gauteng — as part of our commitment to sustainability and continuity.

Our mission now continues under the WHO End TB 2035 Strategy, with a renewed focus on youth health and community-based prevention. We are proud that our work was recognised at the highest level — with the President himself referring to our mobile health platform as "NHI on Wheels."

Legacy of Impact

We’ve proudly led and supported transformative projects with leading development partners:

  • Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI)
As Provincial Lead for the Eastern Cape COVID-19 Vaccination Programme, we helped secure a Presidential Gold Award for Outstanding Community Service.

  • DGMT Trust
In Gauteng, we oversaw the rollout of 10.3 million COVID-19 vaccinations, managing large-scale implementation with speed and precision.

  • KfW German Development Bank
Funded the Keready Youth Health Project — a dynamic platform that earned us the Batho Pele Award for Best Supporting NGO.

  • Small Projects Foundation – Umbono Eye Care Project
We improved learning outcomes for thousands of schoolchildren by providing vision screening and corrective eyewear — helping them see their textbooks and classroom boards clearly.

  • CHAI & HearX Foundation
Through ear screening, we addressed another barrier to learning: the ability to hear.

  • Siyakholwa Foundation, Partners in Sexual Health, and Small Projects Foundation
Together, we deployed 1,000 Social Employment Fund beneficiaries trained in:

    • HIV testing and counselling

    • Nutrition and growth monitoring

    • Eye and ear screening

    • PHC and pharmaceutical support at clinics and depots

What’s Next

We are now spearheading a locally adapted rollout of the WHO End TB 2035 Initiative, starting with Emfuleni Municipality and extending into other high-burden districts. This initiative will combine mobile diagnostics, youth engagement, digital tracking, and household-level outreach.

🤝 We invite partners, funders, and public sector allies to walk this path with us.

Join us — as we turn community-driven health into a national movement.
